    How to play
    1. It needs the data files of your own Cave Story: the freeware release, Cave Story+, or the Switch remaster.
    2. Download a stable or beta build from its releases, or a nightly build; on Linux it is also a Flatpak.
    3. With the freeware, put it in the same folder as Doukutsu.exe: at the first start it extracts what it needs into a data folder, and both must stay there until then.
    4. With Cave Story+, run it in place of CaveStory+.exe; nothing in the game's folder changes.
    5. With the Epic Games Store copy, first delete the stray opengl32.dll from the game's folder, or it crashes at startup.
    6. The arrows move, Z jumps, X shoots, A and S cycle weapons, Q opens the inventory and W the map; Alt+Enter toggles fullscreen.
    7. On macOS, if it can't be opened, right-click doukutsu-rs.app and choose Open.
    8. The 2026 Steam release of the remaster is not supported yet.
